http://mykaratelife.blog.com/2010/11/14/back-to-the-future/

Back to the Future

I have just returned from my second visit to Okinawa. This trip was better than the first for many reasons, but probably foremost was that I could share the experience with my best friend. There are so many things to learn while in Okinawa, and some of them are very hard to put in words. I remember Gaja sensei telling me, for Okinawan Karate, most important is heart, then technique. Then he said that for him, it is heart, heart, heart, heart, then technique. To have a good heart is of the most importance.

I have to say, so many people were open and friendly and welcoming to myself and my fellow travellers. There were many times I was humbled by the generosity we were shown. For example, Tatsuro Minei sensei took us to his friends bar, we commented how we liked his music, and he sent us away with a couple of LP’s of his music. Thinking we could return the favour with a small souvenir from Australia, we left the second time with some more CD’s of his music!

There were many memorable moments, having spent much time with Gaja Takehiro sensei there were so many words of wisdom he passed on. Also, he showed his lighter side when he took a group of Australians on a bus tour, he put on his best girlie tour guide impersonation – it was hilarious! Other memorable moments include seeing Seiko Itokazu sensei, although unwell, demonstrate the strongest of fighting gaze / stare you could imagine. There was also watching Toshimitsu Minei sensei go through junbi undo, his strength and power were obvious while he was just warming up! I cannot forget Nanko Minei sensei’s kindness sharing so much time with two stumbling, bumbling Aussies. There was also the chance to spend some time chatting with some other Aussie karate and kobudo students, there was one who I had never met before, and who was really quite impressive.
So it’s not just the training – which is fantastic, but it’s all the other little connections and encounters that for me, makes Okinawa an amazing place to go and train. So for sure, I can see into the future, and in that future I know that I am going back to Okinawa to train and spend some time with some wonderful people. Apologies for the short post, I will blog again on some more detail in the future, until then,

Happy Training,

Al
